Is Your Tongue Causing Your Jaw Pain?
“Resting tongue posture” refers to where your tongue is placed within your mouth when it's closed – that is, at rest.
Your tongue is a super strong muscle that shapes the palate and affects many areas of your body such as the mouth, neck, shoulders, eyes and nose. This means that your chronic neck tension could actually be coming from your tongue!
When your mouth is closed, your tongue should be resting on your mouth's palate (the roof). Not just the tip of your tongue, but the middle and posterior parts as well. The tip of your tongue should rest behind the front teeth, but not touching.
Once the tongue is in place, lips should be together, and teeth should be slightly apart.
Proper tongue positioning helps widen the palate which in turn positively affects the upper airways, especially in babies and young children.
The biggest implication of improper tongue posture-→ When your tongue rests at the bottom of the mouth instead of the roof, this can restrict your airway and cause sleep apnea and a host of other issues.
Proper resting tongue posture =
Tongue to roof of mouth
Lips together
Teeth apart
